Non Adherence Is Costing Your Pharmacy and Puts Your Patients At Risk
With “medication adherence” being talked about everywhere among health care professionals, it’s on everyone’s radar.
Medication adherence has been a continuing problem for as long as anyone can remember. More recently, though, with the rising costs of health care the impact of non-adherence has risen to crisis level in the national health care system. More and more people are looking for ways to address the problem.
But you feel the effect much closer to home. As more of your patients take fewer doses and wait longer between refills… your patients are increasingly at risk...and you are losing a big chunk of business.
Since medication non-adherence is now costing everyone, (Bruce Roberts former Executive VP of the NCPA said “adherence is a $290 billion problem") several approaches to the adherence problem were bound to emerge. Thousands of independent pharmacy owners like you are waking up to the fact that somewhere between 20% to 35% of their sales and profits are being lost because of missed refills due to poor adherence. What’s worse, these losses aren’t from competition or external forces. You’re losing business from your own patients!
What To Do?
The most simplistic approach is just to “synchronize” the patient’s prescriptions. Synchronization means having all of a patient's prescriptions ready on the same day. This is accomplished by "short filling" prescriptions to have the tablet count run out on the same day. This is certainly more convenient for some patients, and to some extent, the pharmacy.
Prescription synchronization is a positive step forward. It demonstrates that pharmacists are addressing the important issue of medication adherence.
If Only “Sync” Was The Answer
But it’s not. The “convenience” of getting all the medications at one time solves only one of the eleven factors causing non-adherence, and it’s not the major cause.
For the patient, the problem goes deeper than simply getting prescriptions all at once. Just because the patient walks out of the pharmacy with all their prescriptions is no guarantee that the patient will take the medications as directed, finish the doses, or even remain on a maintenance medication. Research has shown this.
According to studies by Pfizer, NIH, and numerous others, a shocking 29% of patients will not finish their doses, and 22% won’t take them at all. Cost, confusion, doubting the efficacy of the medications, poor prescriber communication, and other human factors make up the biggest barriers to adherence.

MedHere Today™ began with a working title of “Mind Your Medicine” in 2006. Two pharmacist-owners of an independent pharmacy in rural Missouri noticed that by making prescriptions more available and working more closely with their patients in regard to their medications (in classic MTM practice) that their patients were becoming more adherent and some reporting better outcomes.
In the intervening years, their approach to medication non-adherence has caught the attention of industry leaders from major pharmaceutical manufacturers to wholesalers, pharmacy organizations and many independents.
